Properties of Matter:which solids dissolve in liquid?

We did an experiment yesterday to find out which solids dissolve in liquid. Our solids were flour, rice, sprinkles, salt, sugar and cocoa. The kids made a prediction and then they got to test it out. Science is so fun!

Our class book

The kids have been working so hard on our class book titled "If you give a turkey ice cream." We have been doing an author study on Laura Numerof, famous for her circle stories like "If you give a Pig a Pancake." We wrote our story together and each student wrote a page. Next week, we will begin our illustrations- just in time to send it off on Wednesday for publishing! Thank you to everyone who ordered one- they are going to be awesome! Here is an example of what our book will look like.

Sink or Float

We conducted a Sink or Float experiment in class yesterday. Each student brought in something from home that they thought would either sink or float. Some of them were surprised about why some things float and others do not. Bath toys float because they are hollow inside, but if they fill up with water, they will sink! They were all very surprised when a cup was floating at first but as the water filled up inside the cup, it started to sink. Science can be so fun!

Learning about safety with Officer Anderson

Ashtyn's mom, Ms. Anderson came in on Friday to talk to the kids about safety and her job as a Police Officer. The kids loved hearing all about her job. We learned how important laws are and that there are many people who enforce laws and rules in our life. Thanks again Officer Anderson!

Fire Safety with Captain McAvoy!

First Grade was able to learn all about Fire Safety today with my brother, Captain McAvoy from Jacksonville Beach Fire Department. We learned about what to do if your clothes catch on fire- do not run but STOP, DROP AND ROLL, that the smoke alarm is the most important device in your home because it could save your life, and what to do if your house is on fire. Please talk with your child at home about your plan if your house is on fire. This is so important because children tend to be scared in a situation like that and would maybe hide from Firefighters.

Captain McAvoy showed them all the gear that he has to wear and talked about how important it is to not hide and try to get the firefighters attention to rescue them. The kids loved it when he mentioned for them to even throw something at the firefighter if they can't get their attention! Thank you to Captain McAvoy for sharing such important information with our kids. Be sure to help your child complete their Fire Safety homework at home.

Didgeridoo Down Under!

On Friday, the kids were able to attend an assembly called "Didgeridoo Down Under." They learned about tolerance, facts about Australia, and about anti-bullying. They loved it! Brianna and McKenzie were lucky "gotcha" winners who got to go to a special session where they were able to try to play a didgeridoo. You can check out their website here: Didgeridoo Down Under
